01 Feb 2009 - Introducing the Amazon MP3 Service

Good Sunday to all! Digital downloads are now back on GoMojo Info pages and are hopefully there to stay this time.

In summer 2006, just ten days before the launch of Razor GoMojo (which at that time was a desktop application), KarmaDownload folded. They were a great UK independent digital download service, offering MP3s without DRM. It was their service that we had integrated with Razor GoMojo for digital download search. In fact I was about to send them the final pre-release version of Razor GoMojo when they suddenly went under. The feature had to be pulled out of the application before release and for about a year we had no alternative, although we were able to offer eMusic and iTunes links for some artists.

In the late summer of 2007, by which time GoMojo was well on its way to being entirely Web based, the Snocap player was integrated with GoMojo. Apart from SnoTunes (a site entirely based on the Snocap service), we probably had the most advanced search and shop selection tool for Snocap anywhere on the Web. Snocap was a great idea in many ways and everyone wanted a piece it, so the selection of music and artists was very extensive. I won't start to describe the technical details or business model here, but a Google search will tell you more if you are interested. Unfortunately only a few months later Snocap laid off most of their staff. The service started to degrade and soon artists were abandoning ship in droves. Then it was announced that imeem, the social networking site, had acquired what was left of Snocap. There was new hope, but unfortunately the service did not improve. Snocap searches through GoMojo were taking ages to complete and in most cases came up empty anyway, because the artists had left! Eventually about a year after integrating Snocap, we had to remove it from GoMojo.

We have now got a replacement for Snocap and one that can last. It's the fabulous Amazon MP3 service and it's now fully integrated with GoMojo Info pages for both US and UK. Go check it out and enjoy.

Love,
Casper
