Now that glorious Technicolor videos are allowed to grace the profiles of Go Mojos, I have put some of my favourites up and will dedicate this entry to explaining why I like them.
First up there's Play, the official video of the single from Miranda Sex Garden's album Suspiria. The sound quality in the clip doesn't do it justice and if you're not already familiar with this song then you might just think that it's one of the most hideous things you've ever heard. However I dare you to listen to the original recording with headphones a few times and then disagree with me when I say that this is one of the most extraordinary songs ever recorded - and performed because incredibly Miranda Sex Garden were capable of performing this song live to full effect. The video reminds you of old horror b movies and really suits the song.
Shaking the Doll is a song from Glow Stars, Heather Nova's first album recording as "Nova". It is not typical of her style, so if you're new to Heather Nova don't use this as an introduction. Look for performances of Paper Cup, Winter Blue or Walk This World on YouTube for a more typical experience. However Shaking the Doll has always been one of my favourites and this rare performance of it captured on video shows why Heather Nova is one of the best live performers around - even back then in the early days.
Luxxury are one of my current favourite bands and I'll be writing more about them soon for sure. It's deep down dirty disco electronica extravaganza with guitars! Sweet and Vicious is a great song with a good portion of humour and the video is brilliantly OTT - on a budget!
Goldfrapp - well what can I say. One of the most exciting new bands of this decade. Utopia is from their debut album Felt Mountain and this live performance is taken from the tour that followed. The live performance of this song has actually improved with time, not that this early version isn't already awesome (if you'll excuse my geekish).
The video for Enjoy The Silence may not be the greatest that Depeche Mode have done, but the character of the king has become iconic among fans and of course it is one of my favourite songs of all time, so it had to be in my selection.
Finally Where The Wild Roses Grow was the big hit from the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds album Murder Ballads, which brought the band to the attention of the mainstream. Some people say that Murder Ballads and the collaboration with Kylie Minogue and PJ Harvey was nothing but an attempt to get mainstream recognition and that the album doesn't stand up to Cave's other work. I completely disagree. Mainstream success does not have to be calculated. It was just another great bunch of songs from Mr. Cave and the success of Where The Wild Roses Grow? How about because it was a good song and a very good video too? Nothing sinister about that!
