Profile low down: THE SHADOW KABINET Steve Somerset is a singer/songwriter, a multi instrumentalist and visual artist. He has produced three albums under the name The Shadow Kabinet. His eclectic journey through the creative world has seen him working with Kevin Godley and Lol Creme making videos, writing for Word magazine, composing music for television and making regular appearances on BBC Radio London. The Shadow Kabinet was born after Steve wrote and recorded two songs under the name for a charity album he was producing. Encouraged by a flood of fan mail he received from around the world he produced HARK! The album received a very positive reaction. ‘The Shadow Kabinet may well be a new name to look out for… the sort of stuff pioneered by Syd Barrett’s Pink Floyd and The Move, and championed, over the years, by top geezers like Andy Partridge and ex-Soft Boy, Robyn Hitchcock’ Rob Forbes Then came ‘Smiling Worlds Apart’ which caused Mark Hudson of the Daily Telegraph to proclaim. "Another gem from London's unsung pop genius." - Mark Hudson Glowing reviews followed… "The Shadow Kabinet's best ... a scenic, colour drenched trip across Steve Somerset's dreamy universe... all aboard!" – Dave Gregory ex- XTC, Tin Spirits, "There is a finesse to Somerset's craftsmanship that comes from the singular way he has absorbed the essence of British pop and filtered its markers for use in his own music--a deft, discerning approach that renders his songs veritable snapshots of British pop song types in an age where there is little reverence for pop music history. For Somerset, what's important is that what has come before is not lost or forgotten, that is given new life and new meaning in a contemporary light--that it makes you think, and groove, in the same moment." Alan Haber Pure Pop “Steve Somerset, AKA The Shadow Kabinet, deserves to take his place among the distinguished company of several English ’60s-inspired psych-pop troubadours. If you are so inclined you can detect in his music traces of Bowie, Syd, Donovan, Ray Davies, Robyn Hitchcock, XTC, Martin Newell and a score of lesser lights, but such influence-spotting is to miss the point. Mr Somerset excels at inventive and romantic tunes on which he plays and sings everything. The songs are simply too good to be derivative.” - Phil Suggitt Shindig Magazine June 2009 Now in 2011 comes ‘Nostalgia For The Future’ a High Quality Download album exclusively released by Go Mojo. |
