Heather Nova - The Jasmine Flower

Heather Nova is without a doubt one of the finest singer songwriters of the last decade or two. She is still best known for her indie hit Walk This World from her 1994 album Oyster. This is really not fair considering the amount of quality material that she has been putting out since. However the variety of genres and brutal honesty of the lyrics in Heather's work has not exactly made an easy proposition commercially speaking. Much like Maria McKee, she doesn't fit the typical female singer songwriter mould and thank goodness for that. You never know quite what she'll do next. As a live performer, she is among the very best and although she works with a number of different people on studio recordings, her live band consists of a small family of musicians, who have worked with her for years on and off. One minute it'll be just Heather with her incredible voice and guitar. The next minute it'll be a blistering rock explosion, with Heather, live guitarist Berit Fridahl and the rest of the gang melting into a frenetic harmony.

The Jasmine Flower is Heather Nova's latest album and it's in many ways a return to her roots. Recorded on a solar powered laptop in her home country Bermuda, all of the songs bar the last one are performed on acoustic guitar, with sparsely added strings here and there, with Heather's voice very much pushed to the front. Some people will compare it to her album Storm from 2003, but actually it is closer to Glow Stars, her very first recording as Heather Nova. Storm had quite a smooth production, while The Jasmine Flower is raw and edgy. In spite of all those acoustic songs, it never gets boring. The intensity of the songs, both musically and lyrically, makes The Jasmine Flower one of those albums where you don't feel like skipping any tracks. You've got to listen from start to end.

For reasons unknown to The Mojo, The Jasmine Flower was only ever released in physical form in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Although it has been available as a download from a number of sources, a lot of people, especially Heather's fans, still prefer to have the physical CD with the cover art, etc. Maybe it was another case of the record label not liking the lack of commercial appeal on these songs, who knows. However GoMojo Basement now has the pleasure of offering you The Jasmine Flower at the lowest price we could manage, available from the UK. We only have a limited number of copies and while we may be able to get more, there is no guarantee, so order now to avoid disappointment.
